SMALL BEGINNINGS

Start the morning with yourself. Not your screen.

A quieter start does not need an elaborate routine. Sometimes it begins with leaving the world outside your room for five more minutes.

Let the world wait a moment

Before we are even out of bed, the world has entered the room: a message, a headline, a list of things to do. Our attention is pulled into other people’s priorities before we have noticed our own morning.

There is nothing wrong with checking your phone. But some mornings, you might like to change the order. A little time with yourself first. The world second. Think of this as an invitation, not another rule to keep.

Choose one ordinary thing

You do not need a perfect setting or a new habit tracker. Open the curtains and look at the color of the sky. Drink a glass of water without scrolling. Let the kettle finish boiling before you pick anything else up.

Choose just one of these things. Pay attention to the small details: the temperature of the glass, the sound outside, the way the light falls on the floor. Nothing needs to happen as a result. You are simply arriving in your own day.

Make the beginning easy

If moving your phone out of reach helps, try leaving it on a shelf instead of beside your pillow. If you use it as an alarm, you can still put it down again after turning the alarm off.

On a busy morning, thirty seconds may be all you have. Take those thirty seconds. If you forget the whole thing tomorrow, there is always another morning. A softer start is a possibility to return to, not a streak to protect.
